Chapter Seventeen

Sexual tension charged the air. It sang through all three of them. The need to finish the bond hung like humidity. The only thing that mattered more was Echo’s safety, so getting to Saint Lakes as soon as possible was important but so was completing their connection. If they strengthened the bond, they would have an internal dialogue, which would help them in the long run. And it wasn’t just Vaughan who thought so. Bandos had the same thought process. They needed each other.

They ate before bedding down for the night. Echo, with his little naked ass, foraged for food nearby. He called whatever he gathered greens, but they were weeds. He divided jerky and dried peas into three piles. As dinner went, it wasn’t much, but it was enough to satisfy them. Vaughan would hunt the next night if they were able to make a fire. If the danger caught up with them than they would continue with their jerky and greens. They needed all the calories they could get so they would likely eat many times.

Bandos hovered around Echo, keeping him safe, but he diverted his gaze to Vaughan every few minutes. His eyes were reptilian, and his teeth had elongated. Echo’s foraging led him farther from their campsite.

“Vaughan.” Bandos had never yelled a day in his life until that moment. It should have been sexy, but the undertone of anger killed the desire.

“What?” Vaughan couldn’t see them anymore because they had gone over a rise, but they weren’t that far away.

“Come here.”

Vaughan sighed. He supposed if he argued it would put Bandos into an even fouler mood. Vaughan left the food on the blanket and put his shoes on, making his way in their direction.

As soon as he went up and over the rise and his gaze met Bandos’s, he knew something wasn’t right. Bandos was half-shifted, and he stalked toward Vaughan as if he were about ready to kill someone.

Vaughan growled and scanned the area, searching for a threat.

If there was one, it didn’t scare Echo. He never stopped searching the ground and picking what appeared to be dandelion leaves. Bandos could have been reacting to the weather for all Echo minded.

“What’s wrong?” Vaughan didn’t have clothing on besides his shoes, so he could shift if and when it became necessary.

“I couldn’t see you.” Bandos closed the distance between them and wrapped his arms around Vaughan as if he were shielding him with his body.

What was he protecting Vaughan from? They were still in their bubble of peace. Had the bubble popped?

“What is happening right now?” Vaughan hadn’t meant it as a joke. He needed to know the answer to that question.

But Echo answered. “I believe Bandos is feeling the mating pull.”

“What? How?”

“I’m among the natural elements. Well, everyone is, but fae learn to embrace it.” That didn’t explain a thing.

“You scared me to death, Bandos. By the gods.” And he could barely breathe with Bandos squeezing him so tight.

Bandos growled and kissed Vaughan’s temple. “You’re safe now, mate.
